If you are interested in economic development in Corvallis and our area, please email the City Manager's office (specifically Kathy.Louie@ci.corvallis.or.us) before noon tomorrow, Thursday, August 12, 2010, to express your wish that the City Council act positively on whatever economic development related topic you wish to state and support.

There is a Council work session on Monday, August 16th, 2010, and the Councilors need to know that this is important to you.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to keep economic development on the agenda and moving forward!

I encourage everyone reading this to attend the Corvallis Budget committee TOMORROW 5/11 at the Lasells stewart center at 7pm - and sign up to testify. Let your city councilors know how you think Economic Development should be handled and funded. They're planning the budget for 2011...and they need to hear from you.

A brief overview of the work of the Chamber Coalition's Economic Development team, and some information on structure. Should provide some clarity. http://www.cbchambercoalition.com/index.php/btcopresentation.html

Katherine, do I understand correctly?

Based on information shared thus far it seems that the ED position should be funded from within the Chamber of Commerce because the city of Corvallis is incapable of supporting the staff position internally due to it's culture, processes and rules.

Another thought: Entrepreneurs are a unique set of folks. I think it really takes someone who understands the mindset, perils, and pitfalls of starting a new business, and in this town, someone who gets the technology (whether life science, software or micro/nano) to help put together the resources to build "traded sector" businesses.

The difference from Corvallis and many other cities where ED is more "institutional" is that I'm thinking start-ups not along the retail/consumer/services sectors, but along the lines of new products/technologies/components/gadgets. The creative class that doesn't always cotton well to "rules". And Corvallis as a city, like all governments, is run by procedures, processes and rules.

Can you give me an example of a Corvallis city position where there is minimal bureaucracy and direction, no micromangement, unencumbered by public process, where an individual is encouraged to pursue an objective by whatever (legal) means necessary, and is given considerable autonomy as long as he/she is achieving the desired goals.

That is fair. I can't speak for how John feels. I am still worried that a key factor to for the Economic Development Position to remain within the Chamber is to avoid delivering overtime compensation and benefits. Starving children making 12 cents an hour consider themselves fortunate but it isn't favorable condition.

Katherine can you help me understand why you feel that the ED position would not be able to receive the required level of autonomy and accountability within the city.

Taken advantage of is in the eye of the beholder. We would have to ask John if he feels taken advantage of. I would argue he more feels rather <b>under appreciated. </b>

One perspective is that when he took the job as economic development director, it allowed him to expand his vision of what needed to be done, have the resources to make it happen, and take what had become a very consuming hobby and devote himself to it full time.
